#givedossantosachance

Just stumbled across an article that was worth a little bit of focus from news leviathan talkSPORT, on our forgotten forward Giovani dos Santos.

He’s the ultimate Spurs player; bags of potential, lots of tricks, never produced, but unfathomably adored by sections of the support, and there are plenty of youtube clips testifying to his ability while wearing the green of Mey-Ee-Ko. But unlike Pav, for example, who reminds us of how talented-yet-frustrating he is with numbing regularity, dos Santos’ legend has grown in Spurs following circles; the less we see him, the better he gets- like a Hollywood monster that becomes even more terrifying with every passing glimpse we’re drip-fed.

My over riding memory of this lad is from his performance from the first half in the Carling Cup game against le arse last year. In a team so horribly disjointed and lacking any form of cohesion, he was stand out terrible and looked like he’d been in the juicer all afternoon. Out of the whole team that needed replacing at HT, he was the only one to get the hook. A more truly terrible showing you will never see.

However, quotes attributed to the former Barcelona player, seem to cast doubt over the image of the talented, yet work-shy show pony, coasting by on raw talent. You can read the whole thing HERE , but just a few of the quotes from the lad himself to catch the eye are worth highlighting:
‘’To be honest I already felt at another club, Sevilla, and we had already completed more than 50 per cent of negotiations. Almost everything had been agreed but with half an hour to go Spurs changed their minds, something I found very odd.’’
‘’After such a long time without having any confidence in me I am now going to get my chance, which makes me feel weird. Even so, I mean to take this opportunity out of respect to the Tottenham fans and also because of the professional I am’’

The first quote, you’d suspect was linked to Crouch being let go- but then if you believe any of the talk coming out of Tottenham during the window, dos Santos wasn’t even being considered as worthy of a squad number, let alone a replacement for someone who had as much game time and managerial faith as Big Pete enjoyed. The real encouragement comes from the second quote.

The club have to shoulder as much responsibility for the lack of development as the party popper himself, but a wiser, more mature young man seems to have emerged from all of this, and we might yet reap the rewards. Let’s hope for the sake of his career and undoubted talent that he and the club’s management can finally work together for the benefit of both parties, and for the fans that love to see players of dos Santos’ ability shine at the Lane.

  1. He was a partying animal but it's dumb to continue to label him as such; he reportedly changed his ways a couple years ago. Give him a chance to show what he can do. I've seen him play some great games for Mexico before crowds twice the size of those we get at WHL. With Lennon injured, Gio would be more than a capable replacement.

  2. Or a VDV replacement, who actually is injured now.

  3. He has his chance last year. Came on against Wigan who we couldn't break down at home. The guy came on, fannied about , gave the ball away cheaply and Wigan scored, Spurs lost. Harry never forgave him. Hasn't been near the squad since.

  4. Give the boy a break! How bad can it get? We need him and he's in the 25.
I fear Harry has some personal grudge which feels very un-professional. Who will last the longest, Harry or Gio?

  5. I'd forgotten the Wigan game but is that all he's allowed, one chance? If he'd been one of 'Arry's favourites he'd have got more I'm sure.

In any case if Harry hasn't and won't forgive him, why is he being kept, punishment? Because his value isn't going to increase if he doesn't play.

  6. Anon 14:52 - His partying ways are behind him now? Turning 21 made him grow up did it??

  7. Exactly 15:07. It's an odd one. They must have had a chat and all agreed on a fresh start. We've bought in an unknown quantity in Falque, so lets hope GDS can start on the same level in Harrys eyes.

Those comments make you think that he's grown up a bit, and to say he wants to show what he's got after all that's happened with him and Spurs shows an unexpected level of maturity. Let's see what he can do.

  8. Lets not forget this is the same Harry Redknapp who didnt give Bale a chance and was about to fuck him off to nottingham forest until BAE got injured and Bales never looked back. Come on Harry give the lad a chance (by chance i mean 5 starts regardless of opp/form) and you never know he could ad to your list of good blags that have made some folk think your a top tactician!

  9. "Lets not forget this is the same Harry Redknapp who didnt give Bale a chance and was about to fuck him off to nottingham forest until BAE got injured"

I haven't forgotten. But then Bale hadn't been at one of Harry's old clubs so he can't be much cop.

I'm glad Gio thinks he is now getting a chance, presumably he has had a chat. Doesn't sound very happy though does he?

  10. We will need to use all the squad this season and the more we can use the easier it will be. If a person is only brought on once a year they will have no confidence. The more we play the harder it is for any opposition to work out the capabilities of a 25 person squad.
I like the fact he mentions he respects the fans.. that is more than we are getting from our prized player up till now.

  11. And its about time Harry implemented some real squad rotation...it really hurt us last season with all the Champions League games coming off a short off-season with the World Cup. These players never really get a break and its evident by all the injuries that continue to happen to players. He needs to make use of all the squad players and play his best combinations in bigger matches, obviously. One match he can use Walker-Dawson-Bassong-BAE, Lennon-Modric-Sandro-Bale, VDV, Defoe.....the next match he can use Corluka-Dawson-Kaboul-Rose, Townsend-Modric(Kranjcar)-THudd-Pienaar (Kranjcar), Gio, Adebayor. These line-ups and combinations are just hypothetical to make the point of the possibilities.

  12. Agree 100%. He has shown he can play a bit. Frankly, Lennon has stalled and doesn't seem able to progress any further. Now would be a great time to give GDS a chance and give Lennon a kick up the @*** with some competition.

  13. He doesn't deserve a chance, he has not shown the right attitude or ability when he has played, he does not show it in the training field and this outburst because we would sell him to a side who offered a third of the fee we had excepted from 2 other clubs demonstrates he doesn't want to play either.

  14. Why is this still a debate? Manager doesn't rate, so unless that changes neither will his status. Clearly he has talent but just not for us. File under Jason Dozzell

  15. It wasn't a debate until those comments. He could have stopped at 'hurt and disappointed', but he carried on and said he wants to show the fans what he can do and so himself justice as a pro. Those are the words of a kid who seems to have grown up a bit. If he's got an attitude like that to go along with his ability, then I think it does warrant another look at him.

He's still a kid which some seem to forget. He's 22 now and know's he's got to get his head down, lest his talent go to waste. Good attitude and ability deserves our support.

  16. Im sure if Gio was with the gooners he would've been given a shed load of chances to prove himself, based on raw talent alone.

It pisses me off that Redknapp doesn't seem to rate SKILL and POTENTIAL. He always errs on the side of experience & doesn't like taking chances. If it wasn't for Levy ushering the likes of Crouch, & Keane etc out the door we'd be f**kd

  17. I'm an unashamed Gio man and think he should be given a chance, mainly because we can't afford not to.
He is the ideal Van replacement, there's a joke in there somewhere involving a horse and cart, but it's too early, and is not a winger.
Harry has an overblown reputation for being good with young talent.
Here's not only Gio's chance but Harry's too.

Problem is with players not often given the opportunity they are so desperate to succeed they overdo it.
    Go Gio Go

  18. That's because you're a true Spurs fan Jim. These are the kinds of players we love to see thrive at our club, but too often our will for them to succeed outstrips their own ability. Agreed, he's not a winger, but to deploy him in the vdv role would be a giant leap of faith. Will Harry do it? Maybe in the Ropey Cup, but in the league? I'm not so sure, but the fact he's been told he'll play means he should be given a fair crack. If he flops, off to Sevilla in January and no harm done. Let the boy play!
