Pav’s Gone: Get Your Violins Out

Nicely done chaps. Most enjoyable in the majority, some fine goals and a tidy victory. Not so impressive was how we mentally disappeared down the tunnel after 80 minutes, and with a little less fortune, might have found ourselves at 3-2 with a fair amount of time to go, but that’s just a minor grumble. Anyone see that tackle from Leds in the first half? Wowzerooney. Also nice to hear the home support, for the first time in my memory, give a heart string tugger of a ‘There’s only one Harry Redknapp’. Harry duly responded by applauding back. I barely heard him utter ‘’stop staring at me’’.

So Pav’s gone. Minutes per goal are misleading in extremis. If minutes per goal were a clear indicator of ability, then Peter Crouch is England’s greatest striker in the post-war era, or at least very close to that accolade. The reality is that more often than not, Pav decided his concrete boots and ‘little trots to make it look like I’m trying’ were the way forward. He reminds me of a guy I met when I was a 15 year old on work experience, who told me to always carry a broom around site to make it look like you were working when you were actually doing the sum total of bu**er all. Why wasn’t he a success? Lack of ability and lack of opportunity? Not a bit of it. Not turning up to training and game day with a burning desire to make himself undropable? A bit closer to the truth, but don’t let your rose tinted ‘misunderstood forrin’ genius’ specs slide down and get in the way of that violin you’re playing ‘Pav’s Lament’ on. Thanks for the memories, Roman. When you decided to turn up, you were a joy, and the goals at Bolton, Young Boys, as well as at home to Liverpool, Fulham and Chelsea will be remembered fondly, and I wish you the best of luck in finding the spark-tak that will unleash that undoubted ability on a regular basis.

I might be in the minority, but Saha has a touch of the ‘Gudjohnson’s’ about him, and I for one welcome his arrival. Still got something to offer on a bit-part basis; mobile, a good finisher, but most importantly, another title winner around the Lodge and on the bench to keep everyone honest in the run in. Between them, Levy and ‘arry haven’t signed too many lemons, and I can’t see Saha being one either. Nelsen? Let’s hope he’s a more reliable back-up than Bass.

  3. clearly an expert on pathetic rants....anywho, for me the Pav situation is a ral shame. Great 'character' is a difficult one to use having never met the guy, but its fair to say we all shone to Super Pav and wanted him to do so well. And in fairness to him, he did not fail, just didn't have the impact as say Mr Modric, bought for a similar fee. I think the writing was on the wall for Pav after 'Arry was left bewildered at his apparent lack of effort/ease in picking up the lingo. He was always down the pecking order and, barring injuries to others, he never really got the games that could have lead to a better return than his, lets be fair, decent record at the time of departure. Pav was never our best player and being used from the bench wasn't for him....it isn't for all and with recouping £8-11m it makes good business sense. That is enhanced, in my opinion, by the signing of Saha (and similar with Nelson/Bassong situation). Yes, he's 33, yes at least one knee is surely made of glass, but the situation of being 3rd/4th choice forward will suit this proven goalscorer more than the departing Russian. We can't always bring in the £20m Brazilians and persuade our biggest title rival to let moody Argentinians help foil them in the Feb-May run in, so in the interim, this is a good bit of business all round. No need to slag anybody off, we're in no worse position, its a shake up that could leave us stronger even if thats not as strong as some Championship Manager experts thought it could be.... I for one will cheer Pav if we ever draw Lokomotiv, thank him for the good times and understand that it didn't quite work out. Just as I'll applaud in anticipation when our new no.9 strips off with the game needing changing. COYS

    1. Great comments. There's nothing so sad as wasted talent, and that's probably at the root of everyones thinking who won't be sheding any tears at his departure. Best of luck, but the outpouring of grief at the departure of a guy who essentially couldn't be arsed is a bit too much to stomach.

    I think not Rio.
Most of the support for him was 'ironic' though to be honest I liked the boy and felt he should have played more often.
But I liked JJ and spoke up for Dos Santos, so what do I know.
Saha might be handy, but Nelson will play less than half a dozen games for us if that. But he was free from Blackburn.Say no more.

  5. Perhaps not here James, but elsewhere certainly. The rose tinted spec salesmen of Tottenham have done a roaring trade over the last few days.

Perhaps 'novelty' rather than 'ironic' all told, but we're all suckers for a talent from a far away land with an exotic name. Shame.
